It has been a very much while I know since my descention into kpop was hella intense and that was all I fucked with for a while. Kind of because western music to me was all sounding very similar and boring me and K-pop has so much drama going on with so many giving you good opinions about it you can hardly get bored of it. I didn't want to turn this into a kpop blog because there are blogs out there that are doing a way better job than what I would commit too but... Still, I am not planning to stay a while but I just wanted to make a post screaming the praises of girls that I adore. That made me believe in Western music and the girls I have come to stan in the Eastern world to the full extent to the point I actually stan them as in I would give up a rent in order to see them. I love them and you are going to too.
1. Meg Myers
So I heard the Hucci remix to Desire. I was going through a dark time (when am I not) and Red Light by F(x) woke me up to a beast in me that lay dormant for so freakin long and I realised my calling in life and what I should be doing with their comeback which caused me to a go on a rampage for trap and dub songs since my flatmate turnt me into someone who *looks* for music again. Not to also mention, I had an epiphany for rock music esp. heavy rock since my pole dancing juices started. My intense vibe that I got from the song which I hardly ever got from any songs anymore led me to search up the original artist. Searched her up on soundcloud, not yt which I am eternally thankful for and was blown away by her music to the point of actual tears. Meg Myers music makes me feel like.... that crazy chick inside me that wants to rip everyone throat out (hypothetically OF COURSE) and at the same time make me cry for people to leave me alone. Like she ahs that desperate thing that I love in songs. Songs that also try and disguise themselves as artistic, hurt ridden songs but really and truly deep down inside you can tell the song is a cry for help. Don't ask questions. Anyway, Meg Myers is phenomenal and a beauty and insane in every way that you can think of and she needs to come to London so Meg if you are reading this FUCKING COME ALREADY.
2. K. Flay
A rapper from.... A rapper who is white but doesn't try her utmost hardest to buy into the bravado makes a refreshing sound. Add this in with her lyrics riddled about her depression and her 75% hip hop/ 25% rock hybrid ambient sound causes her to become a miracle. Her songs give you the same feeling as when you feel depressed but she is like a safe friend that you can share your feelings too. I love K, Flay and she needs to come to London because her music bangs and her lyrics are relatable. That is all. So here I am going to introduce you to the song that introduced her to me, her most poppy song by a long shot and an amazing one at that. Brash and in your face but super fun. Fun Angst. Who would have thought?
(Fun fact: I found this song but typing into Youtube 'I hate Everyone' because again... Iw as having a bad day ¬__¬.)
3. FKA Twigs
As someone who shares a somewhat similar upbringing to her, raised in Gloucestershire for a large amount of her early childhood, being the only black in the village (or town or one of 50 anyway) and then moving to South London, I think I can understand her or at least her influences. In the West Country, there is this impending sadness around you as there is fucking nothing to do. Nothing. No chaos or constant movements like in London but obvs you don't realise it at the time. The constant empty space void of feeling and emotion and vast green landscape along with the simple but stepford wives-ish style that the people here somewhat adopt makes it very easy for someone from this landscape to dream to not bore yourself into oblivion. Lot's of space to dream. Lot's of time and patience to drag things out, whether your life, your thoughts or your music. The super chilled in a English way of course that is evident in the West country has allowed the likes of Trip Hop a.k.a Massive Attack, Portishead which is actually a place, mate I didn't know that until I saw a bus going there and the likes, to develop. I may give West Country a bad rap but the sombering vibe that the West country gives can be quite lush at times. FKA twigs is a product of her environment. Sounds, spaced out and calm like the West Country but closely layered, metallic, loud, claustrophobic and somehow functioning like London. Often using sounds to punch into the still atmosphere, leaving you to fill out the spaces which can be just as satisfying in the auditory sense than being told how to listen, she often contorts sounds and makes them into a hypnotic soundtrack rather than makes a 4 bar rhythm hoping to get people to two step (nothing wrong with two steps, I love two steps, I do.). I also want to say, to fully fully appreciate her music, please try to catch her live because I felt like I was in a trance/ritual, beats and drums and sounds galore and I am sure this bitch knew that I was onto her mass inundation of trying to throw us all into the dark side and subconsciously sell our souls to the devil and that is why this bitch looked and smiled at me. FKA reminds me of Aztec warriors, my inner tribal goddess, Aliens, a Never Ending Story and Anime (but the Steins Gate/ Ergo Proxy kind) all wrapped into one and it is insane. Like seriously. How does one?... Anyway, I am going to show you a song of hers that has actually made it into my top all time ten songs.
Wonderful.
Song reminds me of whenever I feel like I want to disappear with someone.
4. Beyonce
You know the deal.
This song reminds me of a time I was very wanting a husband and reminds me of times I wondered through my home at night on nightly walks and it was a sad time but what a sound track to this. Song reminds me of MK Ultra and dancing in a slinky minimalistic dress with my husband on a beach in Dubai as well as 1st year of uni.
5. Azealia Banks
Bad Bitch. Clever and brings out the camp gay man a.k.a me in me. Me and my friend use to always proclaim how much we wanted to live in the 80s and 90s but mainly late 80s due to mainly the dance tracks they had coming out. I had a legit time when I couldn't listen to Party by Beyonce without being in near tears because I wanted to be in the 90s so much. This chick came in with her 90s dance throwback galore, reminding me of days of the early 90s gay clubs that I wasn't born for. Sass, attitude and sleekness is what AB music gives me even though sometimes, she doesn't do the same. Clever lyrics to and you know how difficult it is for me to grasp lyrics in any songs. Top 5 song by far.
Song reminds me of my sudden want to go to NYFW, a time when my idea and image of this type of music was pure and all about being fucking fancy while interning at vogue in new york before I associated this song with people in Dalston and my intense love for Big Bang at the time (which hasn't waned btw) and how everything to me was just sleek Fashion with a capital F.
6. Jazmine Sullivan
I don't know what it is about her music exactly? but she has this old school hip hop vibe to her that reminds me of when I use to listen to hip hop and it use to bring me to a time where it was like bleak NY I use to think of. She also has a desperation in her songs. The real deal though is her VOICE.
Not hip hoppy at all but reminds me of Sleeping Beauty and it's freaking beautiful
7. 2NE1
JUST WATCH. THANKS.
8. Perfume
JUST FUCKING WATCH
9. Morning Musume
I love Morning Musume, and I don't know exactly why. Their music is kickass and these little girls can perform. Don't @ me. If I was in Jpop group, I would be in MM.
10. Early/ Ignorant Art era Iggy Azalea.
I know I should hate her guts but her music was so good. Understated from the bottom gradualness. It wasn't was chill melodic trap pop that made you feel like you were peaking into a Floridian working class chilling with her boyfriend about to get ready to go to the car park where some Fast and Furious race was going to happen but at the same time being so damn refined and classy and her accent hadn't morphed to the intense imposter accent that it is today. I loved me some Iggy for the fact that she was not as fuck, her style was phenomenon AND on top of that she had some amazing instrumentals.
11. MAMAMOO
Last but certainly, definitely not least. My new baes added to my roster. Mamamoo is jazz and stage presence personified. These girls can sing and they are such a joy to watch, these girls actually look like the fully enjoy performing, esp Hwasa. Their voices are phenomenal and Moonbyul can flow to rass, Did I mention they can sing? 50s jazz and 60s soul is their foray and I live for it
So those are my baes, my loves, my wifes and my mentors. I love these girls for their strong styles and what they do. Unique flavours and executed well.
